The Great Commandment
34. But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36. Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37. Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38. This is the first and great commandment.
39. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
My Interpretation
Jesus had put the Sadducees into their place by proving his knowledge and giving the right interpretation of the scriptures they were trying to preach to him.
The lawyer despite already 'knowing' the law was also testing Jesus. But Jesus replies by referring to the commandments of God, to the law.
The First Commandment of God being to love him, believe in him, have faith in him with every ounce of your being.
The second commandment to show the same love, compassion, to others as you would show love to yourself. For the belief is that we were made in Gods image.
Jesus ends by saying that all of the law, all of the teachings rely upon these two commandments.
